A front office member says that the Green Bay Packers will consider drafting a QB in Rounds 1 or 2.

Despite the free agent additions of Christian Kirksey, Rick Wagner, and Devin Funchess, most would agree that the linebacker, tackle and receiver positions still remain needs for the Green Bay Packers heading into the draft.

On top of that, they could also try to find Kenny Clark some help inside, add another cornerback to the mix, and add some depth to the tight end position as well.

Any one of these additions could help put the Packers over the top as they find themselves in the middle of their Super Bowl window. Matt LaFleur will be in his second season as head coach so we should continue to see the offense progress. Meanwhile, Aaron Rodgers is still Aaron Rodgers and the defensive side of the ball has some serious playmaking ability.

However, in a recent article by Matt Miller of Bleacher Report, a front office member would mention that Green Bay will consider drafting a quarterback early on this year.

Here is the full quote:

"“Even after adding Devin Funchess, receiver is an early need for the Packers. One very well-connected front-office member from another team mentioned he’s heard the Packers will consider a quarterback in the first two rounds.”"

Earlier this offseason GM Brian Gutekunst mentioned that they would be open to drafting a quarterback early and the idea has been tossed around by many since then.

Rodgers is of course on the back nine of his career and some will mention that his numbers the past two seasons have been very average. Which they have.

It’s also easy to point out that Green Bay did select Rodgers in the first round while Brett Favre was still at the helm. However, these two scenarios aren’t exactly an apples to apples comparison.

At the time, Rodgers was considered by many the first overall pick who eventually fell to Green Bay. On the flip side, Jordan Love’s draft stock is all over the place while Jacob Eason and Jake Fromm aren’t even considered first rounders.

Now if Tua Tagovailoa or Joe Burrow somehow fall to pick 30, then sure, we can discuss drafting a quarterback. But not until then.

And even if that was the case, Green Bay would still have to navigate Rodgers’ current contract which has him in Green Bay for likely three more years and possibly four if he continues to play well.

While I’m sure Gutey and Company have done their due diligence when it comes to the quarterback position, ultimately my hope is that they don’t select one early on and instead they choose to address a more pressing need.

This Green Bay Packers team isn’t too far off from being a potential Super Bowl winner and with Rodgers in the twilight of his career, I’d much rather see their early-round draft picks go towards players that can make an impact right away.
