2. Trae Young

This one may come back to haunt me, but here it goes. Trae Young was spectacular for most of his freshman season at Oklahoma. He led the NCAA in points and assists per game, as a freshman at a major college. That’s not easy to do.

However, he was also second in the nation in field goal attempts, first in turnovers, third in minutes per game and first in usage percentage. In other words, he always had the ball in his hands so it’s not unusual for him to lead the NCAA in two of the major categories.

Another important point of clarity is that busting for Young will look different than the other guys. Given he’s projected to go in the top 10 of the NBA draft, that means his expectations are higher. So if he doesn’t live up to those expectations or falls short, yet, still becomes a serviceable player, somebody might call him a bust.

Overall, the low release on his shot worries me and makes me wonder if he can get it off against better competition. He’s also not an elite athlete which will make getting his shot off even harder. All in all, he’s going to have to work on a lot of areas of his game in order to compete with the big boys at the next level.
