The Milwaukee Brewers fought through two rain delays that totaled more than two hours to hand the Pittsburgh Pirates their first loss in seven games at PNC Park Monday night, 2-0.

More from Milwaukee Brewers

We got good Jimmy Nelson on Monday as the right-hander fired six shutout innings at the Pirates (31-26), who are 13-4 in their last 17 games overall.

Nelson (3-6) struck out seven and walked three while allowing only four hits and the bullpen was able to squeegee out the final three innings for Milwaukee’s fifth shutout of the season.

The game was delayed 28 minutes in the fifth inning and later was halted for an hour and 45 minutes in the eighth.

Both of the runs for the Brewers (21-37)—who have won three of their last four—came immediately after play resumed following the delays.

“Probably just a coincidence,” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle told MLB.com.

Aramis Ramirez singled to lead off the fifth against Pittsburgh starter A.J. Burnett (6-2) and went to third when Gerardo Parra doubled to right before play was halted.

After the delay, Jean Segura’s grounder to shortstop was enough to bring in Ramirez for a 1-0 lead.

  • It stayed 1-0 until the eighth. Carlos Gomez and Jonathan Lucroy stroked back-to-back one-out singles and moved up on a wild pitch by Antonio Bastardo.

Ryan Braun rolled a single through the right side to score Gomez for some insurance.

Francisco Rodriguez got the final three outs, including two punchouts, to pick up his 11th save of the season.

Braun and Parra were each 2-for-4 while Ramirez was 2-for-3 before leaving for a pinch-runner in the seventh inning. The trio accounted for six of Milwaukee’s eight hits.

Here are three observations from a long night of damp baseball.
