The Green Bay Packers have a clear concern when it comes to the team's backfield and whether or not Josh Jacobs is going to be able to stay on the field and be productive. Heading into the offseason there were already questions about whether the team could turn the page as Jacobs regressed in overall production averaging fewer yards per carry and seeing his rushing total dropping as well.
Jacobs is now facing an alarming legal situation that could result in a suspension at some point, based on what the league determines. Add in the fact that the playmaker can be cut without incurring a notable dead cap hit, and there is every reason to consider going ahead and embracing the future at the position, looking for a franchise option that is heading in the right direction instead of actively regressing.
Bringing in a veteran like Nick Chubb as quiet insurance and giving MarShawn Lloyd and Chris Brooks a chance to carry your backfield makes a great deal of sense. There has already been a level of distraction around Jacobs, and the aging star has shown signs of regression that make a roster cut a sensible decision even at this point in camp and the preseason.
Jordan Love and Matt LaFleur are an incredible duo that has proven capable of elevating the talent around them. It is better to turn the page a bit too soon and lean on this skill set rather than hold on too long and find yourself on the clock without an answer.
Packers Should Consider Parting Ways with Veteran Josh Jacobs Amid Current Frustrations
You are no longer waiting on the other shoe to drop with another suspension or wondering whether last season's regression is going to continue. Green Bay is already embracing youth offensively and working to build a window of contention that lasts long past the 2026 season. Jacobs doesn't fit this window based on a long history of taking punishment at a position that very rarely ages well.
Giving Lloyd and Brooks a chance to prove they are capable of handling a bigger role while relying on the arm of Love makes a great deal of sense. If the results aren't ideal in the first half of the season, there is no shortage of potential targets to look at ahead of the trade deadline, with Tyler Allgeier coming to mind as an obvious fit for LaFleur and a likely trade target.
At some point, the Packers are going to be forced to turn the page on Jacobs, and there could still be a suspension upcoming. No question, it is better to get ahead of the potential issues and move on from a player dealing with injuries and off-the-field concerns that only add to what was a clear level of regression a season ago.
