One of the bigger surprises the Green Bay Packers have made in free agency was not only opting to let Romeo Doubs walk away, but deciding not to sign a single receiver of note in his place. While it was widely expected that Doubs would leave, there was some level of expectation that Green Bay would work to add depth to the position. Obviously, with the draft still ahead of us and free agency ongoing, there is still time for this to change. It seems that for the time being, the franchise is content with the current talent on the roster rather than pursuing outside additions, quickly elevating the standing of Matthew Golden.

The second-year receiver is coming off what was an average 2025 campaign, offering only 361 receiving yards in the regular season. It was clear that the trio of Doubs, Tucker Kraft, and Christian Watson had a huge advantage, earning more reps and having the trust of Jordan Love. With Kraft recovering from a serious injury and Doubs now in New England, it is safe to say Golden is winning early in the offseason.

Golden's underwhelming rookie debut was highlighted by the Packers' refusal to properly utilize the skillset of a receiver who appeared relegated to a go-route option. The pass catcher is far too talented to be put in this box and now appears set up to fight for the role as Green Bay's primary receiver. Even if Golden isn't able to beat out Watson for this spot, the current offseason has drastically changed his standing.

Packers' 2nd-Year WR Matthew Golden Clearly Winning 2026 Offseason

The receiver did give Green Bay a hint of his potential impact as a featured weapon in the team's lone playoff game. Golden finished the contest with four catches on five targets for 84 receiving yards and a touchdown. Packer fans couldn't help but appreciate the rookie saving his best moments for the biggest stage and giving a hint of what fans hope is to come in the season ahead.

Perhaps it is this performance that gave Green Bay decision-makers the peace not only to let Doubs walk away but also a lack of urgency to add to the position. While the franchise should still add veteran depth, it seems that Golden will be relied on as a starter and featured weapon at the start of the 2026 season.

This is an understandable path based on the level of draft investment in Golden and the clear talent that went underutilized in the receiver's rookie year. While losing Doubs might hurt Green Bay's offensive depth, it is a win for Golden, along with the lack of free agency signings, as each passing day reinforces the confidence the Packers appear to have in the Texas product.

While this could change in the upcoming draft, it seems more likely that Green Bay will utilize its limited picks to address defensive needs. Golden's spot in the starting lineup can be considered safe, as the receiver is clearly winning early in the 2026 offseason.
