After losing to the Green Bay Packers 35-25 on Sunday night, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers may reunite with his former Packers teammate, Marquez Valdes-Scantling. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports that the Steelers are hosting Valdes-Scantling for a workout on Monday, who caught 123 passes for 2,153 yards and 13 touchdown passes while playing for Green Bay from 2018-21.
Available after an injury settlement with the San Francisco 49ers on Oct. 18, the Steelers make sense for a journeyman like Valdes-Scantling. Pittsburgh is all in on this season and Rodgers is who the team has staked its claim to, knowing there's a great chance he retires at the end of the year.
But it also was the Packers that made the Steelers re-think their receiver room after Sunday night and it could be another sign that Green Bay is once again putting fear into opposing offenses.
Packers Force Steelers to Look in the Mirror at WR
Arrowhead Addict's Matt Conner believes the Steelers wouldn't stop looking for receiver depth even after potentially signing Valdes-Scantling as Pittsburgh seems intent on swinging for the fences to deliver a true WR2 for Rodgers behind D.K. Metcalf.
Even then, the Steelers entered Sunday night's matchup with a 4-2 record that had them on top of the NFC North. But it was the Packers defense that gave them second thoughts on how they should proceed moving forward.
While Roman Wilson had his best game of the season and career (four catches, 74 yards, 1 TD), he's not been up to the task of being Metcalf's No. 2 WR. Neither was Calvin Austin, who was confined to four catches and 28 yards.
Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine limited Pittsburgh's receiving corps and Rodgers from doing much damage and most of the 219 yards he threw for came in the second half including a 27-yard touchdown to Wilson with 2:07 to play.
The Packers have been a litmus test all season with a defense that most stats paint as a top-five unit. Clearly, the Steelers' WR room failed the test, and now the front office is scrambling to find a free agent after finding out how far they are from contending.
