The Milwaukee Brewers get a young starting pitcher and a potential long-term answer at first base.

This trade package involves the Milwaukee Brewers getting a young starter in Rodriguez who still has not hit arbitration.

Rodriguez had a 4.35 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP during his rookie season. He had a 3.93 FIP in 23 starts. He finished as a 1.8 fWAR player.

He struggled to start the 2023 season and was sent down to Triple-A. He came back in August and pitched well down the stretch as he lowered his ERA by three runs.

Rodriguez got roughed up in Game 2 of the ALDS by the Texas Rangers.

The Orioles might prefer to keep Rodriguez over having Burnes for one season, but in a loaded division, they might want a top-line pitcher now.

Kjerstad is a left-handed power bat who can play first and outfield. He posted a .467 slugging percentage during a cup of coffee with the Orioles this season.

He is blocked at first with Ryan O’Hearn and Ryan Mountcastle (we will get to him shortly) both slated to play there for the next couple of seasons.

The Orioles have a crowded outfield situation as well. Although, Baltimore may prefer to move Anthony Santander in the offseason to open up a spot for Kjerstad. Santander is set to be a free agent after the 2024 season so it is unlikely the Milwaukee Brewers would want him back.

Getting a young pitcher with years of club control and the Orioles’ third-best prospect would be a nice return.
