Packers Pleasant Surprises: Luke Musgrave

We all knew Luke Musgrave had oodles of talent after being drafted in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s hard to play the position in the NFL, especially as a tight end.

In a deep tight end class, he ranks third among rookie tight ends in receptions (27), receiving yards (249) and first-down receptions (10). However, we knew he had the receiving prowess–it’s the blocking that has been the biggest pleasant surprise.

One of the reasons it’s difficult for rookies to adjust to the position is that they’re asked to do so much. They’re asked to know all of the routes and all of the blocking assignments. Musgrave has been a better-than-advertised blocker in the run game, where he’s held his own. He has laid the building blocks to establish a good foundation as a premiere run blocker later in this career.
