Milwaukee Brewers: 3 Best Manager Candidates After Counsell Left
The Milwaukee Brewers are scrambling to fill their suddenly open managerial position after Craig Counsell put the “sell” in sell out and signed with the Chicago Cubs on Monday. No, I’m not angry. Don’t post that I’m angry.
Despite allowing Counsell to openly interview for other jobs and knowing he was searching for a massive salary, the Brewers are somehow only now starting their search for a new manager. That leaves them behind the other teams who began their process weeks ago.
Still, several quality candidates are available and would be good fits with the Brewers. Let’s check out the three best candidates for Milwaukee.
Keep your eye on these three managerial candidates for the Milwaukee Brewers now that Craig Counsell has left for the Chicago Cubs.
Brewers’ Best Manager Candidates: Gabe Kapler
Gabe Kapler is somewhat familiar with Milwaukee, having played one season for them during 2008. Since his playing days, however, he’s held two manager jobs with the Philadelphia Phillies and then the San Francisco Giants.
Kapler was just fired at the end of September after the Giants failed to make the playoffs for the third time in four years. Still, he’s one of the brighter minds in baseball and is someone to keep an eye on due to his experience and the Brewers hope to remain competitive.
Brewers’ Best Manager Candidates: Mark DeRosa
Mark DeRosa is another candidate with playing experience, having spent 16 years in the MLB from 1998 to 2013. However, he has yet to break into the manager column, struggling to pick up a head job due to his lack of experience. To make up for that, he managed Team USA in last year’s World Baseball Classic and took them to the WBC Finals. He’s a darkhorse candidate, but could be someone the Brewers could take a chance on.
Brewers’ Best Manager Candidates: Walker McKinven
If the Brewers are going to hire internally, Walker McKinven is probably the lead candidate over Pat Murphy. He’s been in Milwaukee since 2016, holding various positions, with his most recent one being their associate pitching, catching, and strategy coach. That familiarity could give him a leg up as the team has watched him closely for seven years now.
