Bucks Film Room Podcast: How Teams Guarded Damian Lillard

The Bucks Film Room Podcast launches every Monday to bring you the most up-to-date analysis and breakdowns about all things Milwaukee Bucks. The podcast aims to help you become a more knowledgeable basketball and Bucks fan.

Jake Reetz (@jajareetz on X), joins as the first guest of the podcast. He does wonderful video breakdowns on X and is also a basketball coach for a high school program. He’s expertly tuned in to the strategies the Bucks are trying to employ and how they’re counting their opponent’s schemes.

Reetz breaks down the Bucks-76ers game and how the two teams went back and forth with different tweaks. Philadelphia was hell-bent on keeping Joel Embiid off the ball so he could help when Giannis Antetokounmpo drove to the paint or rolled after a screen. As a counter, Milwaukee started involving him in the ball-screening action, so he was pulled away from the rim. There are going to be more cat-and-mouse games like that moving forward, as teams are always searching for an advantage.

The Milwaukee Bucks played a game of cat and mouse with their opponents this week when it came to defending Damian Lillard.

MarJon Beauchamp’s defense also stood out in Game 1, as he made his mark defending Tyrese Maxey. He did a nice job using his long arms to funnel Maxey into the help and keep the electric point guard in front of him.

Finally, we preview the upcoming week which includes games against the Miami Heat, Toronto Raptors and New York Knicks.

It will be exciting to see how the Bucks develop as the season goes on. New head coach Adrian Griffin wants to try a lot of different schemes to keep their opponents off guard. None of them worked against the Atlanta Hawks, but it will at least be worth monitoring moving forward.
