The Green Bay Packers had hoped for more clarity at the quarterback position as they headed into the bye week, but numerous questions still linger about Jordan Love and his future with the franchise.

The season began on a positive note when Love steered the Packers to a 38-20 season-opening victory over the Chicago Bears, amassing 245 yards and three touchdowns. He was being touted as the next big thing in Green Bay. Impressively, he found himself among the league’s top-rated passers after two weeks, despite a fourth-quarter stumble against the Atlanta Falcons.

Regrettably, in a season where the Packers were seeking consistent progress, Love and the team’s offense have seen a regression since the season’s outset.

After the first five games of the 2023 NFL Season, Green Bay Packers’ quarterback Jordan Love doesn’t look like the quarterback of the future.

Monday night’s loss to the Las Vegas Raiders was the low point. The Raiders had the 29th-ranked passing defense heading into the game and were down two of their starting cornerbacks. Meanwhile, Green Bay had Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, and all of their wide receivers at full strength.

That made no matter, as the Raiders shut down their passing game and held them to 13 points. Love went 16-for-30 for 182 yards, zero touchdowns and three interceptions. That gives him two touchdowns and six interceptions over the last three games after starting the season with six touchdowns and no picks.

After five games, there are no signs that Love should be the Packers’ quarterback of the future.

Entering the Packers’ bye week, he ranks 15th in passing yards, 36th in completion percentage, ninth in touchdown passes, and 29th in passer rating. He’s also tied for throwing the second-most interceptions in the NFL. Not great, Bob.

The Packers could sugarcoat the issue by directing blame in several different directions. They could point to the team not having a fully healthy Aaron Jones since Week 1 or missing Watson for most of the season.

They could talk about their shuffles and struggles with their offensive line, including losing left tackle David Bakhtiari for the season. Heck, they could even assign blame to Matt LaFleur and his highly questionable playcalling.

At the end of the day, however, they’d be doing themselves a disservice. Love will still have the final 12 games to show he can be the long-term answer at quarterback in Green Bay, but he should be at the forefront of their concerns.

His teammates, coaching staff and front office really want him to be the man to succeed Aaron Rodgers and provide the franchise with a third-straight Hall of Fame quarterback. Unfortunately, the bar should be much lower for Love at this juncture.

Green Bay simply needs to find out if they have a starting-level quarterback. And if the play continues through these first five games, they’ll need to make a difficult decision and consider drafting a quarterback with a high pick come April. That’s the reality the Packers need to face after five games with Love at the helm.
