The Green Bay Packers are gearing up for a formidable showdown this Sunday as they welcome the New Orleans Saints to the hallowed grounds of Lambeau Field for their highly-anticipated home opener.

The Saints, sporting an unblemished record following wins against some less-than-formidable foes, might seem like they’ve had a cushy start to the season, but let’s not be too hasty in our judgments. This is a squad that demands respect, with a defensive unit that can sting like a hornet and a deep-passing game that could give even the best defenses a run for their money.

However, there’s good news for the cheeseheads. The Packers possess the talent and tenacity to go toe-to-toe with the Saints and serve them their first helping of defeat this season. Here are three compelling reasons why Green Bay will strut out of this matchup with a 2-1 record.

Here are three reasons why the Green Bay Packers will move to 2-1 and defeat the New Orleans Saints at Lambeau Field in Week 3.

Packers Have Cornerbacks to Keep Up Saints’ Receivers

The Packers boast a formidable duo in the cornerback department, with Jaire Alexander and Rasul Douglas holding down the fort. Their solid performance in the early part of the season reinforce they have the coverage skills to put the clamps on the likes of Michael Thomas and Chris Olave. We’ll likely see Alexander square off against Olave, while Douglas takes up the challenge of covering Thomas.

A small asterisk: Alexander made a cameo on the injury report, nursing a back issue as of Friday. While it’s a situation worth monitoring, it’s not something that should significantly dent his speed if he suits up on Sunday. The Packers will be banking on these two to bring their A-game and ensure the big plays stay a safe distance away.

Packers Will Stop The Run

This has been an area of concern for Green Bay and it reared it’s ugly head in their Week 2 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. However, New Orleans is down to their third-string running back, giving the Packers every chance to build some momentum in this department. Stopping the run and making the Saints one-dimensional would be a huge advantage for Green Bay.

Packers Will Get Big Plays

Hopefully, the Packers get one or both of Christian Watson and Aaron Jones back for the game. These two would help Jordan Love and the offense create chunk plays even if they’re not 100 percent. The Saints’ defense will have to turn their attention to them, opening up opportunities for their teammates. Love and the Packers need some big plays to keep the defense honest and from unloading on Love via the blitz. Expect them to come early and often.
