Milwaukee Brewers: Corbin Burnes cannot get any run support lately
By Todd Welter
Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Corbin Burnes nearly threw a no-hitter against the New York Yankees and the Crew somehow lost.
Burnes threw eight innings of no-hit ball at Yankee Stadium. The offense provided him no run support to not make it worth coming into the ninth to complete the no-hit bid.
Although Burnes threw 109 pitches through those eight dominant innings making it highly unlikely he would have come in.
Gerrit Cole was just as brilliant in his seven innings as he allowed just three hits and struck out nine.
The game went 10 innings where neither team scored. Then it was a back-and-forth during the final three extra innings with the Yankees walking it off to avoid being swept.
Anytime you have a pitcher flirting with a no-no, it should turn into a win. Not when Burnes is on the mound as the Brewers’ bats are not supporting him lately.
The Brewers have been shut out in two of his last five starts. The bats provided Burnes just two runs last Monday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Burnes did not help his cause when he gave up four runs.
The Crew’s other ace, Brandon Woodruff is getting all the love from the offense.
The offense has turned around the next day scored seven or more runs in four of Woodruff’s last five starts
The Crew entered Sunday’s game having scored 17 runs and then went 10 innings without scoring one.
This is wasting Burnes doing his good stretch of pitching.
Teams are hitting just .203 against Burnes during his last five starts. The Milwaukee Brewers have won just one of those games.
That was against the Minnesota Twins where the offense produced eight wins. Burnes gave up six runs and the Crew needed extra innings to get the victory.
Getting a dominant Burnes performance this late in the season is going to be needed if the Brew Crew want to clinch the division. The offense needs to provide some runs so those outings can turn into wins.
