Packers on Thin Ice: Darnell Savage

Safety Darnell Savage finds himself on thin ice as the Packers enter the 2023 NFL season due to concerns about his recent performance and the lingering uncertainty at his position.

Savage’s 2022 season was far from his best, as he struggled in various aspects of his game. He ranked as one of the lowest-graded safeties by Pro Football Focus, indicating a significant drop in his performance. This decline has raised questions about his ability to be a reliable presence in the Packers’ secondary.

The Packers faced a preseason battle to determine who would start alongside Savage in the safety position, which isn’t a promising sign considering their options. With Rudy Ford, Jonathan Owens, and rookie Anthony Johnson competing for that role, it’s clear the team is exploring alternatives to bolster the position.

Savage’s inability to regain his previous form and the competition for his spot make it crucial for him to step up his game in 2023. If he fails to do so, his standing on the team and in the NFL could become increasingly precarious.
