Updating Packers Position Battles After First Preseason Game
Just Getting Started:
Jonathan Ford as IDL 6
It’s a numbers game for both Jonathan Ford and Brenton Cox. Kenny Clark, Devonte Wyatt, TJ Slaton, Colby Wooden and Karl Brooks are locks to make the roster, giving Green Bay five defensive linemen. However, Jonathan Ford is playing well enough to make them strongly consider keeping a sixth.
Brenton Cox as OLB 6
After a strong OTA and minicamp, Brenton Cox was off to a slow start in training camp. Fortunately, that all turned on Friday night when he had a couple of quarterback pressures and a tipped pass that led directly to an interception. He could have enough long-term potential to twist the Packers’ arm.
Safety 2: Rudy Ford vs Jonathan Owens vs Tarvarius Moore
This is a nasty battle that must see a winner by default. Jonathan Owens struggled against the Bengals, while Tarvarius Moore excelled. That should earn Moore more opportunities with the first-team defense alongside Darnell Savage.
Anders Carlson as Kicker
Anders Carlson had a good start on Friday Night, making a field goal and his first three extra points. Unfortunately, he missed his final two extra points, leaving a sour taste in his mouth from his first game action. The leg strength is there, but he needs a lot of work on his accuracy and consistency.
