Green Bay Packers: If Jordan Love does not work out, this is what QB purgatory looks like

The San Francisco 49ers are the best franchise example since they have had troubles finding a a franchise QB.

The 49ers went from Joe Montana to Steve Young as their franchise quarterback. They have been in QB heck ever since.

After Young retired in the late 1990s, they got some solid play out of Jeff Garcia. He was unable to carry on the Hall of Fane tradition. Most importantly, he could not carry on the Super Bowl winning tradition and the 49ers have been trying to find a long-term solution ever since.

The 49ers used the No. 1 overall pick to take Alex Smith over Aaron Rodgers in 2005. Smith finally started to show he could be a solid quarterback in 2012, but an injury and Colin Kaepernick’s play forced Smith out of the starting job. He turned into a solid quarterback with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Kaepernick took the 49ers to the Super Bowl and ate up the Packers’ defense in the playoffs. Then defenses figured out he was not great in the passing game, and he has been out of the league ever since he started kneeling during the national anthem.

The 49ers traded a second-round pick for Jimmy Garoppolo, and he took them to a Super Bowl. Garoppolo won games for San Francisco when he played, but the problem was injuries limited how many times he was on the field.

They also traded a boatload of draft picks to move up and take Trey Lance in the 2020 draft–passing on Justin Fields and Mac Jones.

An injury wiped out most of his year last season, but he did not look good before going on injured reserve. Brock Purdy might end up as the starter and Lance could go down as a draft bust.

They have also trotted out the likes of Tim Rattay, Ken Dorsey, Cody Pickett, Blaine Gabbert, C.J. Beathard, Nick Mullens, Brian Hoyer, Shaun Hill, Troy Smith, J.T. O’Sullivan, and Trent Dilfer as starters.

Now they are hoping the last quarterback taken in the 2022 draft can finally solve their QB1 issues.

The 49ers have made the playoffs just eight times since Steve Young’s retirement. Yes, they got to the Super Bowl twice and the NFC Championship Game six times, but a lot of that was because they had a great defense.

San Francisco made the playoffs 16 times and won five Super Bowls during the Montana/Young era.

Jordan Love will need some time to develop. Rodgers and Favre did not make the playoffs in their first season as the starting quarterback. If he does not develop into a winning quarterback like those two did, there could be some dark days a coming for the Green Bay Packers organization.
