After making four roster moves on Tuesday, the Green Bay Packers made two more on Wednesday, according to Rob Demovsky, releasing edge rusher La’Darius Hamilton and claiming linebacker Arron Mosby off waivers after Carolina released him.

Mosby went undrafted in 2022 out of Fresno State. He stands 6’3,” weighs 250 pounds, and although he doesn’t have an elite athletic profile, posting a Relative Athletic Score of 3.96, like many additions the Packers make, he is extremely versatile and has special teams experience–two important characteristics to Green Bay.

Mosby would spend most of 2022 on the Carolina practice squad. He saw two snaps on defense and 33 on special teams.

Although Mosby is listed as a linebacker, he has the ability to play multiple positions. Over his career at Fresno State, Mosby played 633 snaps lined up at edge rusher. Another 356 from the slot, 640 in the box, and 547 on special teams.

In 2021, his final college season, Mosby recorded 10 sacks, 37 pressures, and also held up well against the run, ranking 32nd out of 200 eligible edge rushers in PFF’s run-stop rate metric.

Mosby is now the seventh member of the Packers inside linebacker room – assuming they keep him there – joining De’Vondre Campbell, Quay Walker, Isaiah McDuffie, Eric Wilson, Tariq Carpenter, and Jimmy Phillips. The first four players mentioned are roster locks, while Carpenter could make the team once again as a primary special teams contributor–although it’s never a guarantee that five linebacker will make the initial 53-man roster.

For some additional insight into Mosby’s game, here is what SI’s NFL Draft Bible wrote in their 2022 pre-draft scouting report:

"“Lanky, high cut edge defender with very good explosiveness and a lose lower half. Mosby can drop into space and is a physical and reliable tackler. He lacks strength to hold up in the run game, has unrefined hands and does not rush with a plan.“Mosby projects as a developmental 3-4 outside linebacker or strong side linebacker in a 4-3. While he has the athleticism to progress into a starter, he will have to significantly improve his processing. Mosby should find a role on special teams which should allow him to be on a roster as a rookie.”"

Hamilton, meanwhile, had spent the bulk of the last two seasons in Green Bay and primarily on the practice squad. When injuries hit the Packers edge rusher position, Hamilton was occasionally called on, playing 88 snaps over two seasons, logging four pressures.

Hamilton’s path to the 53-man roster was likely close to nonexistent. Preston Smith, Justin Hollins, Lukas Van Ness, and JJ Enagbare are going to be on this Packers team, and once Rashan Gary is added back into the mix, that’s already five players.

If the Packers choose to go heavy and keep six edge defenders, chances are that roster spot goes to Brenton Cox–a high-upside 2023 undrafted rookie who was able to stand out during offseason programs.

Once both moves become official, the Packers roster will remain maxed out at 90 players.
