Can Joe Barry Coach Up the Talent on Defense?

Defensive coordinator Joe Barry is another warning why retreads for your coordinator positions might not be the best route to pursue. Barry was the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions in 2007 and 2008 and again for Washington in 2015 and 2016. His units never ranked higher than 28th in yards allowed per game and had two dead-last finishes in points per game.

Since arriving in Green Bay in 2021, the Packers’ defense ranked 7th and 17th in yards and 9th and 17th in points. Given the downward trend and eight first-round picks on this unit, Barry could be looking at his third straight two-and-out tenure as the defensive coordinator for a team.

Green Bay will rely heavily on their defense, especially during the beginning portion of the season. If Barry can’t get this unit to play like the individual talent they have, he could be looking for a new job next season.
