12 Packers Likely To Make Initial 53-Man Roster Going Into Training Camp
As the summer nears its end, football season approaches with the Green Bay Packers gearing up for training camp on July 26th.
With a 90-man roster in tow, the Packers face the challenge of whittling it down to 53 by August 29th. Thankfully, they have a solid group of 29 roster locks, which you can find in our previous breakdown here.
Now, let’s delve into the 12 Packers who are highly probable to secure a spot on the initial 53-man roster. These players have shown promising signs and are poised to contribute to Green Bay’s campaign.
These 12 Green Bay Packers players will likely make the initial 53-man roster as we head into training camp in one week.
Wide Receivers: Samori Toure
Toure, a seventh-round pick, will provide strong competition for Jayden Reed (who appeared in our roster locks column) in the battle for the starting slot position. Despite his rookie season being cut short, Toure displayed promising potential. While on another team he might be contending for one of the final roster spots, Green Bay’s thin wide receiver depth puts him in the mix for significant playing time heading into training camp.
Offensive Line: Royce Newman
Newman was the starting right guard for Week 1 of last season, but quickly found himself replaced in the rotation. Green Bay enters 2023 with Jon Runyan as the unquestioned starter and Newman on the outside looking in. His roster spot should still be safe, but he has work to do if he wants to earn playing time again.
Defensive Line: Karl Brooks
Brooks possesses the versatility that Green Bay values in their defensive linemen, capable of playing multiple positions along the line and even lining up on the outside if required. He will be in contention for a spot in the rotation, competing alongside fellow rookie Colby Wooden for playing time. The Packers will be looking for Brooks to showcase his skills and contribute to the defensive line rotation during training camp.
Inside Linebackers: Isaiah McDuffie
With De’Vondre Campbell and Quay Walker securing their spot at the top of the depth chart, Isaiah McDuffie is next in line. Barring an injury, he won’t be asked to play much on defense. However, it’s his value on special teams that Green Bay loves.
Outside Linebackers: Kinglsey Enagbare, Justin Hollins
The outside linebacker group for the Packers is now filled with competition, which means players like Enagbare and Hollins will have to prove themselves to secure their spot on the roster. Both players showed promise and finished the previous season on a positive note, carrying that momentum into a productive offseason. However, they understand that their performance in training camp will be crucial in solidifying their place on the team. With hard work and continued improvement, Enagbare and Hollins have the opportunity to make a significant impact for the Packers this season.
Safeties: Darnell Savage, Rudy Ford, Jonathan Owens, Tarvarius Moore, Dallin Leavitt
While my frustration may have influenced my decision to include the entire safety room in the likely column, it’s clear that Savage and Ford are strong candidates to make the roster. However, it’s worth noting that the safety position is not without its uncertainties, and poor performances in training camp and preseason could put any of these players at risk of being cut. The Packers are looking for consistency and improvement from their safeties, and those who fail to meet the team’s expectations could face a difficult decision on August 29. It will be interesting to see how these players perform and compete for their spots during the upcoming training camp.
Specialists: Matt Orzech
All signs point toward Orzech as the Packers’ long-snapper next season. He received a nice bonus and contract from Green Bay and is the only player at his position with any real NFL experience.
