3 Corner Infielders Milwaukee Brewers Should Consider At Trade Deadline
The Milwaukee Brewers are caught between a rock and a hard place as they approach the MLB trade deadline, particularly when it comes to their corner infield positions.
Unfortunately, the return of Rowdy Tellez, who was set to provide a boost to the team, was derailed by a freak injury. Tellez suffered a finger injury that not only pulled his nail but also resulted in a broken fingertip, necessitating a significant recovery period of 4-6 weeks. Additionally, Brian Anderson, who has been a presence at third base, is currently sidelined with a low back strain.
With both Tellez and Anderson out of action, the Brewers face a pressing need for offensive production and reliable defense at the corner infield spots. While they have options like Owen Miller and Andruw Monasterio, the team may not be entirely satisfied with relying solely on them.
In light of this predicament, the Brewers should consider exploring trade options to address their corner infield needs. By acquiring established players who can contribute immediately, Milwaukee can bolster their lineup and fortify their defense. With the trade deadline looming, here are three potential candidates the Brewers should evaluate to address their corner infield concerns.
The Milwaukee Brewers need some upgrades to their corner infielders and should consider trading for any of these three players at the deadline.
C.J. Cron, First Baseman, Colorado Rockies
An All-Star in 2022, C.J. Cron is having one of the worst-hitting season of his professional career. His OPS+ is 90 with a .250 batting average and .293 on-base percentage. His power is also down. However, he has a history of established success and would give Milwaukee a better hitting option than what they have now. He’s also a right-handed hitter who could provide some support against lefties, potentially even playing in a platoon with Tellez when he returns.
Cody Bellinger, First Baseman/Outfielder, Chicago Cubs
It would be wild to have Cody Bellinger and Christian Yelich on the same team, but it’s a realistic scenario just a few weeks from the trade deadline. Bellinger has spent most of his time in the outfield, but can slide down to first base, having played 11 games there this year. Brewers’ manager Craig Counsell isn’t shy about moving guys around the diamond either. Bellinger isn’t the hitter he once was, but he’s very quietly having a nice season.
Jeimer Candelario, Third Baseman, Washington Nationals
Jeimer Candelario would cost much less than Bellinger, a factor we can’t ignore under the current Brewers’ ownership. He’s only on a one-year deal, so Milwaukee has to be careful about not trading the farm for a guy who might not be back next season. However, he is one of the better third basemen in the NL and someone who would be an upgrade over their current situation.
