Packers’ 2023 player rankings 60-56: On the bubble
We are moving into the exciting portion of our Green Bay Packers‘ 2023 player rankings. These guys are on the bubble and will need strong training camps and preseason to make the team’s initial 53-man roster.
We are working our way from worst to first and have covered the following rankings so far:
- 90-86: The longshots of longshots
- 85-81: The underdogs
- 80-76: An outside chance
- 75-71: The improbables
- 70-66: A slim chance
- 65-61: Special teams and dark horses
60: Shemar Jean-Charles, Cornerback
After being selected in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft and spending the last two years with the Packers, Shemar Jean-Charles’s position on the roster is officially in jeopardy. Jaire Alexander, Eric Stokes, Rasul Douglas and Keisean Nixon are all locks at cornerback. That leaves Jean-Charles in a battle with Kiondre Thomas, Corey Ballentine and Carrington Valentine for the final one or two cornerback spots, with the latter two holding the edge.
The Green Bay Packers have several players battling for their jobs on the roster bubble as we enter player rankings 60 through 56.
59. Sean Rhyan, Offensive Guard
The Packers’ track record in the third round is horrendous. They released Amari Rodgers in the middle of last season, and 2022 third-rounder Sean Rhyan might not even make it that long. He played in one special team snap and zero offensive ones during a rookie campaign in which he was fully healthy. He showed no signs of life during Organized Team Activities or minicamp. Luke Tenuta, Caleb Jones and Rasheed Walker may have passed him on the depth chart.
58. Innis Gaines, Safety
Green Bay may not have a lot of top-end talent at safety, but they’ve acquired quite a collection of mediocre talent at the position. Darnell Savage, Rudy Ford, Tarvarius Moore and Jonathan Owens are probably locks. Dallin Leavitt was a major special teams contributor as well. That leaves few opportunities for Innis Gaines.
57. Anthony Johnson Jr., Safety
Gaines’ primary competition for one of the final safety spots is rookie seventh-round pick Anthony Johnson Jr. There likely isn’t a roster spot for the rookie this year. Still, the Packers will want to keep him around on the practice squad. Johnson is an athletic safety who can line up in multiple positions. After moving from cornerback, he’s still learning the ins and outs and would benefit from a year or two in development.
56. Jake Hanson, Offensive Guard
Jake Hanson started for the Packers during Week 1 last season and is now on the roster bubble. That’s as much of a sign of the development from players like Zach Tom, Walker and Jones as it is a sign of Hanson’s demise. He’s been incredibly inconsistent and unreliable. He still has a chance to make the roster, but his work is cut out for him.
