Surprise standouts from Packers OTAs: Sean Clifford

The most questionable Packers’ selection in the 2023 Draft was their fifth-round pick used on Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford. Most analysts designated Clifford as a priority undrafted free agent, and thought it would even be a reach to select him in the seventh. Green Bay had other plans.

Clifford isn’t the most athletically talented quarterback, but he is one of the smartest. One school of thought is that the Packers reached for him partly because of his ability to help Jordan Love prepare for games. Without a veteran quarterback on the roster, the Packers might’ve wanted someone to push Love mentally and help him prepare for all aspects.

However, Clifford is also showing his ability on the field. He ran a wonderful two-minute drill on Tuesday that capped a solid OTA. He and Danny Etling will be battling for the backup job, but it looks like it’s his to lose.
