3 players Milwaukee Bucks should consider with their only draft pick
By Todd Welter
Eastern Michigan’s Emoni Bates could be worth the risk.
Bates was considered a potential generational talent coming out of high school. Off-the-court issues and not living up to the hype in college has changed all that.
He is still 6’9″ with the ability to score from any place on the floor.
He might be long gone by the time the Milwaukee Bucks are on the clock. His past legal issues and slight frame could also have him falling to the final pick.
He has the ability to shoot, but his three-point shot is still inconsistent. He does not have a huge wingspan despite being 6’9.”
If teams are scared off and he is still on the board, taking Bates with the final pick could be a sneaky smart move by Horst.
The Milwaukee Bucks have a strong team culture that can help Bates stay out of trouble and develop. Bates would not need to contribute immediately, so he could spend his rookie year getting stronger and working on his shot.
While his wingspan is not ideal for his size, it is still a 6’9″ wingspan. He is still long enough to develop into a decent defender.
He could develop into the big wing who can shoot that the Bucks need off the bench. He still has a lot of potential to be more than just a role player. If Horst wants to go with a player he can use down the road, Bates might be better than taking a European player who is stashed overseas.
If he busts, it only costs the team the final pick in the draft. That is why Bates might be worth the gamble if other teams refuse to roll the dice.
