3 players Milwaukee Bucks should consider with their only draft pick
By Todd Welter
Purdue big man Zach Edey could replace Brook Lopez someday (keyword is someday).
Edey was NCAA’s National Player of the Year. He declared for the draft, but he is maintaining his college eligibility. He has until May 31st to withdraw from the draft and return to Purdue.
If he stays in the draft, there are a few mock drafts that have the Milwaukee Bucks taking the 7’4″ big man.
His size and shot-blocking ability makes him a natural replacement for Brook Lopez if he departs in free agency. Lopez’ sheer size allows him to seal off any opposing players from getting a rebound or clogging driving lanes, so maybe Edey could have that similar presence.
If Lopez is re-signed, Edey can sit behind him and develop an outside shot. Not being able to shoot three-pointers is the biggest reason Edey is considered a late second-round pick. He is a pure post player, and while that would have probably made him the No. 1 pick 30 years ago, it makes him a fringe NBA player in today’s game.
Lopez did not have much of an outside game when he came into the league; now he is Splash Mountain. Maybe Edey can develop a three-point shot much like Lopez did and be a draft-day steal.
