Best remaining free agent fits for Packers: John Johnson III, Safety

John Johnson III is the perfect blend of a safety who can contribute right away and potentially stick around for a couple of years as a starter.

He’s started 80 games in his career at safety and is only 27. That should give him a couple of more years to contribute at a high level.

He’s not a game-changer at the position, bringing plenty of flaws with him. However, he had the best 2022 campaign of any Packers’ safety currently on the roster.

Amos ranked 64th out of 68 safeties who played at least 50 percent of the snaps last year with a PFF grade of 53.4. Darnell Savage ranked 68th with a grade of 47.5. The newly acquired Jonathan Owens was 67th at 48.3.

Johnson wasn’t a world-beater by any means, but he did rank 48th with a grade of 62.8, which was the second-lowest of his career. The Packers have plenty of safeties, but Johnson would give them an actual starting caliber player.
