One day after selecting outside linebacker Lukas Van Ness with their 13th overall pick, the Green Bay Packers swung for the fences again by drafting tight end Luke Musgrave with the 42nd overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

The Packers still have the 45th pick in the second round and the 78th selection, which falls in the third round on Day 2. That gives them plenty of ammo to continue addressing needs for 2023 and beyond.

For now, let’s check in on the good, the bad and the grade for their selection of Musgrave.

The Green Bay Packers used the 42nd overall draft to pick tight end Luke Musgrave in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

The Good

The Packers addressed a significant position of need with this selection. Robert Tonyan signed with the Chicago Bears and Marcedes Lewis is still an unrestricted free agent and unlikely to re-sign in Green Bay. That leaves Josiah Deguara and Tyler Davis.

Musgrave has great size and speed for his position, traits the Packers love in their draft prospects. He has the skills to be impactful both as a blocker and pass-catcher early in his career. He shouldn’t have issues challenging Deguara and Davis for the starting position.

The Bad

He only played two games in 2022, a question mark, to be sure, about his tape. He left a lot on the table as a prospect and didn’t produce nearly as much as some of the other top tight end prospects in this class.

His hands are inconsistent and he has work to do in that department. He tries to catch with his body too often and that leads to too many drops.

The Grade

He’s a true high-risk, high-reward selection and could end up being the best tight end in this class. Musgrave didn’t produce in college, but his tape showed flashes of a player who can become a big-time contributor in the NFL. It may just take a couple of years.

dark. Next. The good, the bad, the grade for Lukas Van Ness

Green Bay is in a position where they can reach for the sky with their prospects. They won’t be in contention in the next year or two and Musgrave is a long-term player. I like the fit, even if the passed over Darnell Washington for him.
