Packers are most unpredictable team in 2023 NFL Draft
When you log into PFF’s mock draft simulator, select the Green Bay Packers and hit the “enter draft” button, it gives you a list of their needs on the left-hand side. Unlike most teams, one line wasn’t enough to cover the gap for Green Bay, as their needs stretched to a second, barely used, line in the row.
Quarterback, wide receiver, tight end, defensive line, and safety are identified as their immediate needs. A case could also be made for the offensive line, running back, outside linebacker and even cornerback.
Such a wide variety of needs makes it very difficult to predict what the Packers will do in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft or any other round.
There’s no telling what the Green Bay Packers will do in the 2023 NFL Draft, as they are the most unpredictable team this year.
Green Bay moved up to the 13th overall pick as part of trading Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets, and we still don’t have more clarity. They could go with a wide receiver, offensive line, safety or tight end at that position. A lot of help that was.
If they go with a receiver, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, if he falls, has to be the favorite. Another consideration could be Zay Flowers. The prospects at tight end include Dalton Kincaid or Michael Mayer.
Offensive line candidates are Peter Skornoski, Broderick Jones, Paris Johnson Jr. and Darnell Wright.
Brian Branch, a safety, is another prospect in consideration, as are edge rushers Nolan Smith and Myles Murphy.
That cuts it down to only…checks notes…11 players and five positions Green Bay could realistically select with their top pick just 13 selections into the draft. Usually, we have a better understanding of what each team will do.
The chaos will only increase as the draft gets deeper. There are certain positions the Packers have to add to in the early rounds, which could mean them reaching for a prospect or two. As it currently stands, their roster isn’t anywhere near complete.
To make matters more unpredictable, the Packers aren’t in a win-now situation for the first time in three decades. They’ll need a couple of years to clear their salary cap and see what they have in Jordan Love. That means they could draft for players who will help them most in 2025 instead of 2023.
It’s a new era in Green Bay. One that comes with uncertainty and unpredictability. Let’s sit back and enjoy the ride.
