First-round prospects Packers should avoid in NFL Draft: Michael Mayer, Tight End

The most likely tight end for the Packers to select with their top pick is Michael Mayer, out of Notre Dame. He’s ready to contribute right away and can have an impact in the run and passing games.

Mayer fits all the stereotypes of a tight end. He’s big, strong and thrives with physicality. He can use that muscle to bully defenders on the line of scrimmage and toss people around. He also has strong hands in the passing game and can catch anything thrown his way. The biggest downfall is he has to make a lot of contested catches because he struggles to create separation from defenders. That could make life difficult in the NFL.

With Josiah Deguara at the top of the depth chart, it will be difficult to avoid selecting a player such as Mayer in the first round. Theoretically, he can play right away and provide some protection for the running games and Love. Packers should avoid that temptation.
