The Badger State: Wisconsin Football Prepares For Spring Practices
The Badger State is the essential daily (Monday-Friday) newsletter about the state of Wisconsin sports, including updates about the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers, Wisconsin Badgers, and more.
Like the Wisconsin Football program, The Badger State only has one goal: To win a championship. We have other objectives, but they all point toward that one goal. Without further ado, let’s dive into your essential daily updates about the Milwaukee Brewers, Wisconsin Badgers and Green Bay Packers.
Wisconsin Football Prepares For Spring Practices
Wisconsin will kick off their Spring practices this Saturday for the first time under new head coach Luke Fickell. The players are excited, and it’s a palpable atmosphere in Madison.
Gone are the days of fullbacks and pounding the rock 35 times a game. Fickell brought in offensive coordinator Phil Longo to run his air raid offense; everyone is excited to see it implemented. It will be a massive change from the pro-style offense Wisconsin has run almost exclusively for decades.
Fickell continues to kill it in the media, re-instating his goal to win a championship at Wisconsin. We should also get a good look at the football team, as every practice will be open to the media. There’s never been more hype surrounding the football team.
Packers Re-Sign Corey Ballentine
Green Bay continues to bring back core special teamers, re-signing cornerback Corey Ballentine. Ballentine was on half of the special team’s units last season, and that is where he projects to make his primary impact again in 2023. With Jaire Alexander, Rasul Douglas, Eric Stokes and Keisean Nixon returning at cornerback, Ballentine likely won’t see playing time on defense. This has Rich Bisaccia’s handprints all over it.
Adrian Houser Could Be Headed Toward The Bullpen
The Brewers are rich in starting pitching talent. Corbin Burnes, Freddy Peralta and Brandon Woodruff are the first three starters in the rotation, with Eric Lauer occupying the fourth spot. That leaves a three-man battle for the fifth spot between Adrian Houser, Wade Miley and Aaron Ashby.
Ashby is out with an injury and will miss the beginning of the season, while it appears Houser will be moving to the bullpen. That leaves the fifths starting spot to Miley.
