The Green Bay Packers are in a difficult spot leading up to the start of free agency. They are cap-strapped now and in the future, and have plenty of difficult decisions to make about the shape of their roster. Allow me to be of service.

Green Bay has been mapping out plans about what this offseason will look like for months now. They just need the final dominos to fall before deciding which route to go. Aaron Rodgers is obviously the biggest domino and the first one they’ll need. After that, we’ll understand what they’ll try to accomplish in free agency.

With the legal tampering period beginning Monday, March 13th and free agency technically starting on Wednesday, March 15th, here are three bold predictions about what the Packers will do.

Here are three bold predictions for the critical free agency period that will define the 2023 season for the Green Bay Packers.

Packers don’t re-sign Dean Lowry, Robert Tonyan, Jarran Reed, Adrian Amos, Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb, Dallin Leavitt, Rudy Ford and Corey Ballentine.

Green Bay doesn’t have enough money to re-sign their plethora of free agents, so they’ll have to let some guys walk they would’ve otherwise loved to have. They added a first-round pick in Devonte Wyatt to the defensive line last year and have TJ Slaton hungry for more snaps, making the loss of Lowry and Reed easier to swallow.

That’s not the case at safety where Amos, Leavitt and Ford are all free agents. However, none of them inspired confidence they can play well on defense in 2023 and Green Bay can’t afford to bring back the latter two based on special teams play alone. It will also be sad to see Tonyan, Lazard and Cobb go, but money is a driving factor.

Packers re-sign Mason Crosby, Marcedes Lewis, Eric Wilson, Yosh Nijman, Keisean Nixon, Krys Barnes, Tyler Davis and Justin Hollins.

The Packers will keep some of their key guys, mostly veterans at certain positions. Crosby comes back to finish his career. Lewis returns for another year to help develop a high draft pick at the position. Nijman, a restricted free agent, won’t get away from Green Bay as they smartly bring him back as a swing tackle. Nixon will be the headliner here, as one of the best kick returners in the NFL.

Packers sign one of: Parris Campbell, Mecole Hardman, Juan Thornhill, Irv Smith Jr. or Julian Love

When it’s all said and done, Green Bay won’t have a lot of free agency money to work with. However, they’ll still try to add someone at one of their weakest positions: Tight end, safety or wide receiver. Hardman would be my first choice of this bunch, but I don’t think they can go wrong with any of them. They each bring important skills to the table at a much-needed position.
