The Green Bay Packers will have to address the tight end position in one way, shape, or form this offseason. Signing a free agent at the position could be a real possibility.

Marcedes Lewis and Robert Tonyan are unrestricted free agents, leaving a gaping hole on the roster.

Lewis could retire depending on what Aaron Rodgers does, or could search for an opportunity elsewhere. He’s been a glorified blocker the last few years, but is well-respected in the Packers’ locker room and would be a big blow on and off the field.

Tonyan hasn’t recaptured his magic from the 2020 season following an ACL tear in 2021. He looked a step slower last season (and even in 2021 before he injured himself), but could recover some of his explosiveness after another offseason of workouts.

The Green Bay Packers have a massive need at tight end this offseason and these are the seven best free agents available at the position.

A favorite maneuver of general manager Brian Gutekunst is to address a position in free agency and the draft. We’ve seen it before on the edge with the selection of Rashan Gary and signings of Preston Smith and Za’Darius Smith, as well as last season when they drafted Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs and Samori Toure while signing Sammy Watkins (that example didn’t work out so well). The draft and free agent route is a real possibility this offseason.

It will be difficult for Green Bay to create enough cap space to sign one of the premier free agents in the NFL, even if that was their style (spoiler: it’s not). However, what this tight end class lacks in elite players, it makes up for in depth.

There are several quality players available that Green Bay could be interested in. The Packers usually expect their tight ends to hold their own while blocking at the line of scrimmage and go out and catch a pass or two. A few of these guys fit that profile. Here are the top seven tight ends in this year’s free agency class.
