The Green Bay Packers used every tool in their toolbelt to create maximum space on their salary cap in previous seasons and the toll is coming due.

That toolbelt included the rarely used void years, a way to expand a player’s salary cap hit across multiple years. The Packers negotiated with seven players in previous seasons to add a void year and move already paid money down the road to future years.

After passing Monday’s deadline without making a move, Green Bay will owe $16.4 million to seven players with void years in 2023. This shows they are willing to begin paying the piper on their previous cap-saving moves. Green Bay could still re-sign any of these free agents, it would just add to their cap hit.

These seven players on the Green Bay Packers have voided years that add dead money to their 2023 salary cap.

Adrian Amos ($7.95 million)

Amos accounts for nearly half of the commitment. He had the worst season of his career in 2022 and it’s unclear if Green Bay wants to bring him back. He was a decent free agent addition, usually a slightly above-average safety and good communicator. However, his time in Green Bay may have soured.

Dean Lowry ($3 million)

It’s highly likely the Packers move on from Lowry this offseason. They used a first-round selection last year to draft Devonte Wyatt and also have TJ Slaton patiently waiting. Lowry’s tenure was up and down, but the Packers should recognize it is time to move on.

Jarran Reed ($1.5 million)

Reed was a veteran free agent addition for Green Bay last offseason and it will likely be a one-and-done stop. The Packers simply lack the money to bring back any non-essential players. Reed was fine with Green Bay, picking his play up late in the season, but wasn’t what they were hoping for when they signed him.

Randall Cobb ($1.4 million)

Cobb took a paycut last season to stay with the Packers and was probably still overpaid. He’s only here because of his connection with Aaron Rodgers. He’s a great teammate and locker room guy, don’t get me wrong. His on the field production is where it’s lacking.

Marcedes Lewis ($1.1 million)

Lewis continues to be a productive blocking tight end and one of the best in the NFL. His receiving chops are long gone, but he and everyone understands his role. It would be nice to have him back for another season or two considering the Packers don’t have a long-term solution on the roster.

Mason Crosby ($1 million)

Crosby has been a Packer for life and it would be nice to see him finish his career here. He still has a couple of years in the tank and isn’t completely washed even if his leg strength is quickly abandoning him.

Robert Tonyan($500,000)

Tonyan hasn’t been able to replicate his breakout 2020 campaign. He suffered a torn ACL in 2021 and lacked explosiveness in 2022. It will be curious to see what kind of contract he’s looking for and whether he fits into the Packers’ long-term plans.
