3 Packers who could be sleeper salary cap casualties in 2023
Packers who could be sleeper cap casualties: Rasul Douglas, Cornerback
It would be a major surprise if the Packers cut Rasul Douglas one year after signing him to a three-year deal, but crazier things have happened.
Green Bay would save $4.2 million by completing this move while eating $3.5 million. That’s a significant amount for a cap-strapped team. Their other cap-saving options include waiting until next year to cut him when they’d save $9 million or renegotiate his deal and save between $1.6-2.5 million, depending on how they do it.
The Packers have Jaire Alexander and Eric Stokes returning, lowering the need for a third cornerback. Douglas had a solid year, but could not capture his 2021 magic. He gave up a completion on 67% of his targets (compared to 51% the year before) and had basically the same number of interceptions and pass breakups despite playing 200 more snaps. He’s still a quality player, but Green Bay must decide between his on-the-field skills and off-the-field cap savings.
