5 key players Packers might lose this offseason
One of the toughest aspects of the NFL is the business side. Players build relationships with one another and with the front office decision-makers. However, both sides have a job to do at the end of the day and the Green Bay Packers must make decisions based on their team’s best interest.
Every year, Green Bay moves on from players they would love to keep in a perfect world. Unfortunately, circumstances indicate they must move on and look elsewhere.
That could come to a head this offseason, as Green Bay potentially turns the page to a new era. This could mean a lot of difficult business decisions and losses of key players.
Whether due to trades, retirement or free agency, the Green Bay Packers could lose any of these five key players this offseason.
Key players Packers might lose: Marcedes Lewis
Lewis was a steady hand in the locker room, usually staying quiet but always commanding the attention of his peers when he spoke up. He was also a great blocker, helping Aaron Jones, AJ Dillon and Aaron Rodgers feel secure with the blocking in front of them. His future might be tied to Aaron Rodgers.
Key players Packers might lose: Robert Tonyan
The Packers’ tight end position could look completely different in 2023. If Lewis and Tonyan fail to return, Green Bay will have to look elsewhere. Tonyan is an unrestricted free agent and could be looking for a multi-year deal after playing on a one-year contract in 2022. He hasn’t looked explosive, but maybe more time post-ACL tear will help him recover that athleticism.
Key players Packers might lose: Adrian Amos
Safety is another position in transition this offseason. Amos is a free agent, but played horribly in 2022–the worst season of his career. He has a void year on the Packers’ books for next year, but it’s unclear if they want him to return on an actual contract.
Key players Packers might lose: Allen Lazard
Lazard is one of those guys you would love to see Green Bay keep. He worked his way up from the practice squad, grinding every step of the way. However, he’s worth/asking too much money for the Packers to re-sign him. With the young guys such as Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs demanding larger roles, Lazard will likely search elsewhere for a new team.
Key players Packers might lose: Aaron Rodgers
There’s still a lot to figure out with Rodgers: Will he retire or return? If he returns, do the Packers want to trade him and start Jordan Love? If they want to trade him, can they find a willing partner in a deal? So many questions that will be answered in good time.
