Former Green Bay Packers defensive backs coach Jerry Gray is now in Atlanta as the assistant defensive head coach after his contract expired following the 2022 season. This left an opening on Matt LaFleur’s coaching staff that has reportedly been filled.

According to Aaron Wilson, the Packers are expected to hire Arizona cornerbacks coach Greg Williams.

Williams has been in that role with the Cardinals since the 2019 season when he followed Vance Joseph from Denver after he became Arizona’s defensive coordinator following a two-year head coaching stint. Before spending the 2018 season with the Broncos, Williams was the Colts’ defensive backs coach for two seasons and, prior to that, the Chargers’ assistant linebackers coach.

During Williams’ time with the Cardinals, the Arizona secondary ranked in the top 10 by pass defense DVOA on two occasions during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. They did, however, rank in the bottom third in that category in his other two seasons as cornerbacks coach. The Cardinals also ranked in the top 10 in interceptions once as well, and that happened in this most recent 2022 season.

Among the many issues on defense for the Green Bay Packers in 2022 was the communication breakdowns in the secondary. Far too often, defenders were out of position, which resulted in a big play for the offense. To some degree, there was a disconnect between Joe Barry, Jerry Gray, the players, and what their responsibilities were in specific situations. At some point along the way, there was a breakdown in messaging as well as what the game plan was supposed to be in either the film room, on the practice field, or both, which led to those in-game issues.

With Ryan Downard still on the Packers coaching staff as the safeties coach, presumably, Williams will continue to oversee the cornerback position specifically. We do not yet know if Williams will be the passing game coordinator like Gray was.

This hiring is yet to be made official by the Green Bay Packers.
