6 Pros and cons of Packers trading Aaron Rodgers
Pro: Unleash Matt LaFleur’s offense
There’s been a quiet, raging war between Rodgers and Matt LaFleur’s offensive principles since the coach arrived.
LaFleur wants to spread the weapons, put them in motion to confuse the defense and use the middle of the field. Think about the way the San Francisco 49ers utilize their weapons despite starting a seventh-round rookie at quarterback. LaFleur has shown some flashes of that creativity, but his offensive approach has yet to be fully embraced. That would change with Love at the helm.
Con: Signals a rebuild
It will take at least a year or two for the Packers to right the ship and return to their winning ways following a Rodgers trade. The $40 million cap hit will make it very difficult for them to be competitive next season and then it depends on how ready Love is to step into the spotlight.
If Love isn’t as ready as he’s shown or as his teammates and coaching staff believe, Green Bay will be caught amongst the Chicago Bears of the world without a quarterback. That’s a brand new feeling for the Packers and one they wouldn’t like very much or at all.
