Packers draft prospect to watch: Michael Mayer, TE, Notre Dame

Tight end is another position that is up in the air for Green Bay. Marcedes Lewis is a free agent and could retire even if the Packers could afford him. Robert Tonyan is another free agent who will likely be looking for a huge payday. He started to look more like his pre-injury self later in the season and should be able to return to form after another offseason of working out.

Michale Mayer is one of the best tight ends in the draft class. He would be a tremendous safety valve for Green Bay and has very reliable hands. He’s also a great blocker in both the run and pass games–something the Packers value tremendously.

Tight ends are hard to project in the NFL, as they are asked to do a lot in all aspects of the game. As a result, they usually take a few years to develop. If this is the Packers’ first-round pick, it might be best to bring Lewis back for another year to help mentor Mayer.
