The 16 Green Bay Packers who are free agents in 2023
The Green Bay Packers’ 2022 NFL season ended in another painful fashion: they lost to the Detroit Lions in a must-win game with a playoff appearance on the line. The multitude of mistakes further cemented the reasoning for Green Bay to move on this offseason.
Similar to recent years, general manager Brian Gutekunst will be extremely busy. The Packers are already projected to be over the salary cap and have plenty of free agents of their own. That will make his job very difficult, as he sorts through the franchise’s next steps.
As we make sense of what should take place in the coming months, let’s begin by simply reviewing the free agents in Green Bay. Here are all 16 Packers who are facing some sort of free agency.
The Green Bay Packers have several difficult decisions this offseason, as these 16 players are set to become free agents.
Offense:
- Randall Cobb
- Allen Lazard
- Robert Tonyan Jr.
- Marcedes Lewis
- Tyler Davis
- Yosh Nijman
It sure looked like it could’ve been Cobb’s last game as a Packers, as he walked off the field arm in arm with Aaron Rodgers. Allen Lazard is another unrestricted free agent the team must decide on, as Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs prepare to take the reigns.
Tonyan showed flashes of his 2020 self throughout the season, but never turned into the downfield threat he became. Another year post-ACL tear could help that. Lewis could be another retirement candidate.
As for Nijman, his fate could’ve been sealed in the second half of the Lions’ game. He struggled in pass protection and was replaced by Zach Tom. Tom was stout as a rookie and could use that performance to catapult himself into a starting role in 2023.
Defense
- Dean Lowry
- Jarran Reed
- Justin Hollins
- Eric Wilson
- Krys Barnes
- Adrian Amos
- Dallin Leavitt
- Jonathan (Rudy) Ford
- Keisean Nixon
Lowry’s season ended prematurely due to injury and the Packers’ defensive line played better in his absence. Reed might’ve been a one-year rental.
The biggest decisions will come in the secondary. Amos looked washed for most of the season and could have his best football behind him. Leavitt, Ford and Nixon played critical roles on special teams and are key contributors in that area. Ford could be a contender for a safety spot, as Green Bay will have plenty of opportunities at that position next year.
Special Teams
- Mason Crosby
Crosby wants to play another season and showed he is as good as ever. He drilled a few long kicks at frigid Lambeau Field over the last two games. They should have him if he wants to be back in Green Bay.
