Packers notes vs Rams: Run games will feature prominent role
It feels like forever and a day since we last saw the Green Bay Packers on the football field. They finally return following their bye week and will host the Los Angeles Rams on Monday Night Football.
Green Bay got some help this week when the Seattle Seahawks lost to the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday night. However, the Packers must do their job the rest of the way to even give themselves a fighting chance at the final playoff spot.
That begins against the Rams in a contest Green Bay must win (more on that later). As we struggle through the work day, here are some notes about the Packers-Rams prime-time matchup.
When the Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Rams kick-off, the run games promise to feature prominent roles and other notes about the game.
Run Games
It will be interesting to see if either team successfully establishes their run games. Green Bay is up against a stout Rams’ defense that has no problem slowing down the ground game. They want to force Green Bay to become one-dimensional and rely on Aaron Rodgers’ arm. The Packers, on the other hand, want balance in their attack and will try like heck to establish Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon.
The conundrum is the opposite when the two teams switch possessions. The Rams are one of the worst running offenses in the NFL and the Packers are one of the worst running defenses in the NFL. Something has to give.
Wide Receiver Tandem
The Packers will have Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs lining up at wide receiver together for the first time since Watson’s breakout. Doubs was the star in training camp and preseason, but hasn’t carried that success over to the regular season. Watson is getting a lot more attention from defenses these days, and we’ll see if it helps Doubs in his return from injury.
Disappointing Teams
Both the Packers and Rams had much higher hopes than being a few games under .500 at this point in the season. They were Super Bowl hopefuls, but this season hasn’t played out as either one hoped. Green Bay has an outside chance of making the postseason, but it’s over for the Rams. It will be interesting to see how they respond.
Must-Win
If the Packers want any chance of clinging to a slim playoff hope, they must win the rest of their games. They’ve put their backs against the wall by blowing multiple second-half leads and failing to beat lesser-talented teams. There’s no margin for error, as the Packers try to scratch, scrape and claw their way back into the playoff picture.
