5 Trade Targets for the Milwaukee Brewers this offseason
By Todd Welter
Anthony Santander can bring some pop to the Milwaukee Brewers outfield.
Renfroe and his 29 home runs are now in Los Angeles. Matt Arnold could see if Frelick or Wiemer could replace Renfroe’s power. He could also see if the Baltimore Orioles might be willing to trade Santander.
The Orioles have two stud outfield prospects ready for the Major Leagues, so someone has to be moved to open up some at-bats. Santander is coming off a season where he belted 33 home runs. He is a switch-hitter who can play left or right and DH. He was a 2.5 WAR player with a 120 wRC+, and projects to hit 29 home runs next season.
Although he might be better at DH, as his defense is not very strong, he still has two years of club control and projects to make around $7.4 million next season.
Jake Burger might be the odd man out in Chicago but could help the Crew at third base or DH.
Burger is a player that the Brewers typically would jump at the chance to acquire. He is 26, has power, and cannot get consistent playing time because of a long jam on the Chicago White Sox roster.
Yoan Moncada is manning third for the White Sox. The Sox have Yasmani Grandal, Eloy Jimenez, Andrew Vaughn, and Gavin Sheets ahead of Burger at DH.
There just is not a whole lot of room for Burger to get everyday at-bats on Chicago’s south side. The Sox do need help at second base. Kolton Wong might intrigue the Sox to possibly give up their former first-round pick.
Burger does come with an injury history. He missed significant portions of his minor league career with major injuries. He was playing well until an injury cut short his 2022 season. Still, he hit .250 and smacked eight home runs in 51 games.
He was a 113 wRC+ hitter last season and projects to be around 105 next year. If he can stay healthy, he could be platooned with Luis Urias or take some DH at-bats. Plus, he is still not arbitration eligible.
Yandy Diaz could help out at third base if the Rays want to clear out his salary.
If there is a team that the Brewers like doing trades with, it is the Tampa Bay Rays. If there is a team that is always willing to clear out salary, it is also the Rays.
Diaz is still under team control for two more seasons and projects to make around $5.4 million next season. Diaz is not a power hitter, but he has only committed 15 errors in his career. He also had a .824 OPS and a .401 OBP last season. Although he does not hit a lot of home runs, he can hit the ball hard.
He posted a 146 wRC+ and was a 3.8 WAR player last year. Diaz could solidify third base, whereas Luis Urias has failed to accomplish that in two seasons. He would be reunited with Willy Adames in the infield.
If Diaz can impact the Milwaukee Brewers as Adames did, that would be a winning trade.
