As is common practice in the NFL, the Green Bay Packers worked out several players on Tuesday, including two familiar faces at the wide receiver position.

According to ESPN’s Rob Demovksy, the Packers brought in Geronimo Allison and Danny Davis, along with four offensive linemen.

What you need to know about the Packers Tuesday workouts

Allison spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Packers as a former undrafted rookie. During his final 2019 season, Allison caught 37 of 58 passes for 306 yards and two touchdowns. Since then, he has appeared in only three NFL games, all with Detroit during the 2021 season, and had just two targets per PFF ($$).

Davis was with the Packers as recently as this summer and was beginning to make a push for the practice squad after making several plays during training camp and a pair of receptions for 45 yards in Green Bay’s first preseason game. Unfortunately, an injury would derail Davis’ summer, and he was eventually cut.

Admittedly, the decision to bring Allison in is a bit of a head-scratcher. But I suppose if the Packers are looking for someone with experience in Matt LaFleur’s offense as well as playing alongside of Aaron Rodgers, Allison does fit that mold. Davis, meanwhile, makes a lot more sense, given the upside that he displayed this summer and still being in his rookie season.

With four receivers already on the practice squad, the Packers likely aren’t keeping a fifth, so either there would be a cut incoming or Juwann Winfree possibly being added to the roster if Green Bay was to sign one of these players.

The other four players included offensive tackles Sage Doxater, Derek Kerstetter, and Sam Schlueter, all of whom are 2022 undrafted rookies with no NFL experience, along with center Chris Owens, a 2021 undrafted rookie with no NFL snaps.

With 10 offensive linemen on the 53-man roster, Jake Hanson on IR, and Caleb Jones on the reserve/non-football illness list, the Packers do not have any linemen on the practice squad at the moment.

Teams bring in players for workouts on a weekly basis, so there is certainly no guarantee that the Packers are going to sign any of these players. However, if they do, a cut will have to follow with the practice squad at full capacity currently.

As I wrote recently, perhaps a spot could open up if the Packers do promote La’Darius Hamilton to the 53-man roster since he is now out of practice squad elevations, and there is a need at edge rusher.
