Packers will likely overhaul roster after this season
The Green Bay Packers mortgaged their future in recent seasons to maximize their Super Bowl window. Unfortunately, that window came slamming shut sooner than anyone was hoping and now Green Bay must pay the price.
The Packers not only have free agents they must find a way to re-sign (they’re already projected to be about $3-4 million over the 2023 cap), but they will also have some difficult decisions to make on veteran players well.
The 2023 free agents include, but are not limited to Randall Cobb, Allen Lazard, Marcedes Lewis, Robert Tonyan, Elgton Jenkins, Yosh Nijman, Dean Lowry, Jarran Reed, Adrian Amos and Mason Crosby. That’s a lot of production to replace with very few resources to do so.
The Green Bay Packers have a lot of work to do after this season and will likely see their roster overhauled as a result.
Furthermore, Green Bay must also make contract decisions about David Bakhtiari, Aaron Jones, and Preston Smith. The Packers can save money on the 2023 cap if they cut each of those players at some point in the offseason (although, they will also have to eat significant money as well).
That leaves a lot of veteran players for Green Bay to replace. I’m not advocating they keep all or even most of those players considering how this season has gone. However, if they have to replace those guys with rookies or lower-level veterans, it will only get worse in Green Bay.
This is the price the Packers knew they’d have to pay when they began moving money around to keep players a few years ago. It was a difficult decision back then with the hopes of winning another Super Bowl, but it’s even more difficult to swallow now that they never even made it to the big game and crashed disgustingly this season.
The 2022 campaign could mark the beginning of some dark days for the Packers with some of the voided money going all the way until the 2026 season. As we learned this season, NFL standings can change on a whim. However, prepare for a major roster overhaul heading into next season and beyond.
