Packers’ playoff chances double after Week 10 victory over Cowboys
There’s just enough hope to be dangerous with when it comes to the Green Bay Packers’ chances of making the playoffs.
Following a 3-1 start that wasn’t pretty, but still had fans thinking Green Bay could hang with the top teams in the league, the Packers had a harsh reality check. They lost five straight games in five different stadiums and plummeted down the standings. According to FiveThirtyEight’s prediction machine, this brought their playoff chances to a measly five percent.
It turns out the Packers needed a little home cooking to get back on track.
After weeks of decline, the Green Bay Packers saw their playoff chances double following their Week 10 victory over the Dallas Cowboys.
Following a loss to the lowly Detroit Lions, the Packers did the unthinkable and defeated the 6-2 Cowboys at Lambeau Field on Sunday. Any Given Sunday. This more than doubled their playoff odds and brought it all the way to 12 percent.
At 4-6, the Packers are still half a game behind Washington for eighth place in the NFC and 1.5 games behind the San Francisco 49ers for the seventh and final playoff spot. They also have a difficult schedule ahead of them, making the task even more daunting.
Washington’s victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night hurt the Packers’ chances, but a victory over the Tennessee Titans on Thursday will improve that percentage to 20, depending on what else happens across the NFL landscape.
They’ll need more help as the season wears on. Will the 49ers continue their ascent? If so, the Seahawks will need to fall from the NFC West’s throne for Green Bay to surpass them. Whatever happens there, the Packers need to pass one of them. It won’t be easy, but there’s one thing the Packers’ can focus on: winning.
