Coming off their best offensive performance of the season, the Green Bay Packers may be getting a boost prior to Thursday night’s game with Tennessee as Randall Cobb is now eligible to return from IR.

Cobb left the Packers’ Week 6 matchup against the New York Jets with an ankle injury and was placed on IR a few days later.

Cobb hasn’t seen a heavy workload this season, averaging 28 snaps per game, but he’s been effective when on the field. In six games, Cobb has caught 18 of 24 passes (75%) at 14.3 yards per catch, according to PFF ($$).

Among slot receivers, he ranks fifth in average YAC and 17th out of 72 receivers in yards per route run. He also continues to be a steady presence on third downs, catching six of seven passes for 102 yards and six first down conversions.

The Packers’ receiver room has battled injuries for much of the season, which as a result, has led to concerns around depth. Against an aggressive Dallas front on Sunday, the Packers leaned heavily on the run game, which then helped open up the passing game, particularly off play-action, and led to some explosive plays.

The return of Cobb will provide Aaron Rodgers with another reliable target, especially in high-leverage situations. However, let’s hope Rodgers doesn’t become too fixated on Cobb and continues to spread the ball around, which again should include a big role for Christian Watson. To put it simply, his speed is game-changing for this offense.

This week the Packers will face Tennessee, who also boasts one of the top defenses in the NFL, ranking eighth in points per game, fifth in total pressures, and third in yards per rush allowed.

While the run game should continue to be a key component of this Packers offense, rushing yards may not come as easily against Tennessee, which then could impact the overall effectiveness of the passing game.

If the Packers do activate Cobb off IR, they will have to make a roster cut with them having all 53 spots currently accounted for.
