Packers notebook: Trade deadline, roster moves, defense
The Green Bay Packers have had a busy week and not in a good way. Many fans were hoping for some roster moves at the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday. And although they got some, it wasn’t the way anybody expected or hoped.
At 3-5, the Packers are basically halfway through their season. They have a very good chance to snap their four-game losing streak this week when they play the Detroit Lions. After that, the schedule gets much more difficult with games against the Dallas Cowboys, Tennessee Titans, and Philadelphia Eagles. That’s their season if they don’t start winning.
For now, here are some notes from the web about the current state of affairs surrounding the Packers.
Here are some notes about the Green Bay Packers from around the web including news about the trade deadline, their roster, and defense.
Darnell Savage
Once upon a time, Savage was an up-and-coming first-round pick with a bright future ahead of him. He finished the 2020 season by dominating the final eight regular season games and gave many hope he could be a star. That never materialized, as he’s not only plateaued since then, but has greatly regressed. His lackluster play has been a big reason why the Packers defense has failed to live up to the hype this season. Matt LaFleur singled him out to the media, saying he has to “clean it up.”
Trade Deadline
Fans hoped Green Bay would buck their trend and finally make a move at the trade deadline. It’s been reported they offered their second-round pick for Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Chase Claypool before the Steelers went with the Chicago Bears’ second-rounder instead. That sounds all too familiar for this franchise. Once again, they came up short and failed to make a move.
Roster Moves
The Packers did make a few roster moves on Tuesday. They released running back Patrick Taylor from the 53-man roster and outside linebacker Kobe Jones from the practice squad. It’s expected they’ll activate Kylin Hill from the PUP to the roster and sign Taylor to the practice squad. They also worked out three defensive players: Tackles Austin Faoliu and Jordan Williams, and linebacker Charles Snowden.
Injuries
Christian Watson was diagnosed with a concussion following his scary hit last Sunday. His status is unknown, as he works his way through the protocol. De’Vondre Campbell appeared to avoid a long-term knee injury. That’s good news, but it’s still unknown how much time, if any, he’ll miss. I’m sure we’ll get updates throughout the week as the team progresses through their practice schedule.
