Buy or Sell these 6 trade candidates for Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers and the rest of the NFL are just under two weeks away from the 2022 NFL trade deadline. And that could spark the Packers to finally make a move in the trade market.
Green Bay is seemingly always connected to mid-season free agents and trade candidates, but never pull the trigger. Could that change this season?
Here are six trade candidates who could be available leading up to the deadline and whether the Packers are actually realistic candidates for them.
With the 2022 NFL trade deadline coming up, buy or sell these six candidates as realistic trade candidates for the Green Bay Packers.
Brian Burns, EDGE, Carolina Panthers
After the Panthers fired their head coach and defensive coordinator, many analysts speculated they could be headed toward a firesale. That hasn’t quite happened despite them trading Robbie Anderson after a tumultuous Sunday. Brian Burns, one of their stud defenders, has been rumored to be available. The Packers already have Rashan Gary and Preston Smith on the outside which makes trading their limited resources for Burns highly unlikely.
Verdict: Sell
D.J. Moore, WR, Carolina Panthers
As much as I would love for Green Bay to trade for Moore, I don’t think it’s likely. The fifth-year wide receiver put up three consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons heading into this year, but has struggled to adapt to yet another new quarterback. He also just signed a contract extension in the offseason and is a core building block for the Panthers. It would take a lot to entice the Panthers into a trade.
Verdict: Sell
Denzel Mims, WR, New York Jets
Denzel Mims may not move the needle much for the Packers’ wide receiver room, but he is a warm body that can be had cheaply. Green Bay is hurting badly right now with Christian Watson, Randall Cobb and Sammy Watkins all out with injuries. The latter just returned to practice, but it’s unclear when he’ll return to the game. Mims has been inactive every game this year and could be a cheap option to add depth and intrigue at the position. He obviously wouldn’t solve all (or any) of the Packers’ receiving woes which is why I’m selling.
Verdict: Sell
Kenny Golladay, WR, New York Giants
Golladay is a much sexier wide receiver target than Mims and the best one on this list not named D.J. Moore. However, he’s owed way too much money to make a deal with the Packers feasible. Even if the Giants will eat some of it. The Packers have a cap issue this year and for the foreseeable future. Adding a huge question mark like Golladay at that price is out of the question.
Verdict: Sell
Johnathan Abram, S, Las Vegas Raiders
Defensive coordinator Joe Barry is experimenting with Darnell Savage in the slot and Rudy Ford at safety. Ford is a great special teamer, but isn’t suited to play heavy snaps on defense. Trading for someone like Abram could be the answer. Right or wrong, if a deal comes involving the Packers, it will probably be on the offensive side of the ball.
Verdict: Sell
Chase Claypool, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers
Claypool has already been connected to the Packers in a change-of-scenario-type deal involving Amari Rodgers. That’s definitely one possibility. Green Bay could also try to buy even lower with a conditional pick. Whether it’s Claypool or another receiver of his caliber, this is probably the most likely type of player the Packers will acquire if a deal goes down.
Verdict: Buy
