Thin at receiver, Packers to workout Ty Fryfogle
By Paul Bretl
The Green Bay Packers find themselves very thin at the wide receiver position.
Christian Watson missed another game for the Packers with a hamstring injury and his status moving forward is unknown. Sammy Watkins has been on IR the last four games, although he is eligible to return this week. Meanwhile, Randall Cobb left with an ankle injury and is likely to miss some time.
To bolster their depth, the Packers will be working out 2022 undrafted receiver Ty Fryfogle from Indiana, according to Mike Garafollo. Fryfogle spent the summer with Dallas.
Fryfogle was an experienced pass-catcher coming out of college with 277 career targets, including 100 during his final season. In total, he would catch 159 of them (57.4%) at 14.0 yards per catch with 14 touchdowns per PFF ($$). He played a fair amount both from the slot as well as on the boundary.
In 2021 specifically, Fryfogle was a big part of the Hoosier offense with 100 targets, as already mentioned, but he caught just 47 of them at 10.8 yards per catch. He was also utilized as a downfield target with 30 passes thrown his way of 20-plus yards, tied for the 11th most that season, but caught just four of them.
Of the many things that this Packers offense needs, a deep threat is one of the bigger things—although I’m not expecting Fryfogle to be the answer to that.
Fryfogle stands 6’1” and weighs 205 pounds. He posted a Relative Athletic Score of 9.12 out of 10, including a 4.53-second 40-yard dash.
If the Packers choose to sign him, they could do so to the practice squad, where they’d then likely add Juwann Winfree to the 53-man, where Green Bay currently has an opening with Tipa Galeai going to IR. Another roster spot could open as well if Cobb ends up on IR—although Green Bay will still need room for Watkins.
Or I suppose Fryfogle could go straight to the 53-man, but I see that as the less likely scenario.
We will see what comes of this — perhaps nothing as it is just a workout — but I wouldn’t be expecting any sort of major impact.
