Better than the sum of its parts

The Milwaukee Bucks may not have the same individual talent as the other serious NBA Finals’ contenders, but what they do have is worth a lot more.

Since his arrival, head coach Mike Budenholzer has designed a system that maximizes the talents of his players and puts them in the best position to succeed. Brook Lopez is a perfect example. He was signed as an afterthought in 2018. Budenholzer immediately employed the now infamous drop coverage that turned a lumbering defensive liability into a perennial All-Defensive candidate.

Giannis Antetokounmpo also took his leap into stardom the same year the Bucks stamped their arrival as NBA contenders.

The Milwaukee Bucks 2022-23 season is nearly upon us and here is the ultimate in-depth look at their team and what will define success.

Before the Bucks won their championship, there were plenty of questions about whether Antetokounmpo was good enough to carry his team to a Finals’ victory, whether Khris Middleton could ever be the no. 2 on a championship team and whether Budenholzer had the coaching acumen to get the job done. They emphatically answered all of those questions.

Two years later, they continue to be a team that is better than the sum of its parts.

Milwaukee has assembled a veteran roster that doesn’t try to do too much. They don’t have anyone chucking shots outside of their capability. Their roles are well understood and masterfully implemented on the court. Get the ball to Giannis, spread the court and wait for the rock to find you. Work hard on defense, stick to the principles and funnel guys to your mammoth seven-footers hanging out by the rim.

The Bucks are championship contenders for the fifth straight season. That was unfathomable for most of this franchise’s existence. Let’s sit back, relax, and enjoy this ride.
