8 biggest disappointments for Packers at quarter mark of 2022 NFL season
After reviewing the biggest surprises through the first four games, we’ll take a look at the eight biggest disappointments on the Green Bay Packers.
Expectations play a large role in assessing who will be labeled a disappointment. If you had high expectations coming into the season due to past performances or a high draft status, you’re more likely to land on this list if you haven’t lived up to the hype.
This may seem like a large list (it’s double the surprises portion) considering Green Bay has a 3-1 record, but this is a team with Super Bowl expectations that has failed to live up to that billing so far this season. They have made some good progress and there is plenty of time for them to continue their development. These proclamations are simply a reflection of where they are at right now.
These eight players have been the biggest disappointments on the Green Bay Packers after four games of the 2022 NFL season.
Robert Tonyan
It may be unfair to place Tonyan on this list, but he hasn’t given Green Bay much offensive spark through the first four games. He’s clearly on a snap count, as he’s only played more than 50 percent of the offensive snaps once this year, but even when he’s on the field you forget he’s out there. Through four games, he only has 13 receptions for 106 yards and one touchdown. Green Bay needs more out of him.
Jarran Reed/Dean Lowry/Devonte Wyatt
The entire defensive line not named Kenny Clark should be in this category. Sound familiar? The Packers’ front was supposed to be vastly improved this year with the additions of Reed and Wyatt, and the returns of Lowry and TJ Slaton. Unfortunately, this trio has struggled mightily to set the tone at the line of scrimmage and is getting bullied far too often. The defense is giving up five yards per rushing attempt (ranking 22nd in the NFL) in part due to this trio (and the next guy on the list).
De’Vondre Campbell
What happened to the 2021 All-Pro version of De’Vondre Campbell? After experiencing a breakout season with the Packers, it appears Campbell is regressing to his normal ways. He isn’t nearly as explosive as last season and is struggling to cover the same amount of ground. Oh, and he’s already had more missed tackles in four games this season than he did all of last year.
Sammy Watkins
Availability is the best ability. Or, at least that’s how the old adage goes. It certainly holds true with Sammy Watkins who injured his hamstring in practice last week and found himself on the IR a few days later. Watkins has struggled with injuries his entire career and there’s no saying when he’ll be able to return to the field.
Adrian Amos/Darnell Savage
The Packers’ safeties have experienced their ups and downs throughout their tenure together and are currently in a lull. Savage, specifically, hasn’t looked good and is far too hesitant from his deep safety position. Unfortunately, he’s looking like Ha Ha Clinton-Dix 2.0. Amos has been a little bit better, but has had some ugly moments of his own. Green Bay needs more from this duo if they want to fix the secondary issues they’ve been experiencing.
