Green Bay Packers TE Marcedes Lewis

As of now, Marcedes Lewis is questionable for Sunday’s game with a groin injury, but as I wrote about recently, his availability is a must for the Packers’ offense.

If the Packers are going to find any success on offense, it begins with sticking to and finding some success in the run game. Now, this won’t be an easy task against a very good Bucs front seven, but even if the Packers fall behind or are averaging just a few yards per carry, it’s important that they don’t lean too heavily on the passing game–something we’ve seen them often do in the past when things aren’t going well and with less than ideal results.

As an honorary sixth offensive lineman, Lewis is going to (hopefully) play a key role in the Packers’ run game on Sunday. Through two games, he ranks ninth among all tight ends in PFF’s run blocking grade, with Aaron Jones averaging 8.25 yards per carry when running outside the tackles.

Lewis will also be utilized in pass protection to help the Packers’ offensive tackles as well.

A strong rushing attack begins in the trenches, and it will have to be the catalyst for this Green Bay offense on Sunday, with Lewis being an extension of that offensive line unit.
